Customers always ask me, “what are the most popular promotional products?”.
But this isn’t really what they want to know.
Are they asking:
- What product do you sell the most of?
- What do people like getting the most?
- What type of product is the most common in a given industry or type of event?
All of those questions have very different answers. But do you really want to know what we sell the most of? Do you really want to know how you can be more like your competition?
My guess is you don’t.
You probably want to know what promotional products have the best conversion rates or which ones keep you top-of-mind for your customers and potential customers.
These answers are not as easy because they are very, very personal.
Personal to your business audience, that is. It isn’t about my business. It’s about yours.
How to Figure Out Your Most Popular Promotional Products
Know Your Goal. What are you trying to do with this giveaway?
Know Your Audience. Who are they and what do they like? What are their obstacles in attaining their goals?
Choose Something Unique and Useful or Entertaining. Your giveaway doesn’t have to be as utilitarian as a Swiss army knife, but if it’s not useful, it better be entertaining.
Spread the Word. Social media has made promotions even more fun. Take pictures with your giveaways. Have a good time. Be creative in your displays. Pretty soon people will be asking you for them.
Create Scarcity. There’s no better way to get people to want something than by making them think its quantity is limited. You can do this through playing a game for a prize (great idea for trade shows) or using words like “limited time.”
The most popular giveaway is a personal thing. What is most popular for my business, may not be for yours. And even if it was, why do you want to give out exactly what I am giving out, or worse — what your competition is giving out? You need to factor in the needs and wants of your audience.
