It’s Thursday, which means another blog post and some awesome marketing ideas!
But Thursday has also become a special day on Social Media….#TBT. If you haven’t heard of the #TBT hashtag yet, it means “Throwback Thursday.” People use it as an opportunity to share past photos and events. From looking back on weddings, birthdays, and other celebrations, to those 80’s hairdos and crazy 90’s outfit choices, there is something special about re-celebrating events (or laughing at the clothes we wore).
People love Throwback Thursday, and it is not just for individuals. You can utilize Throwback Thursday in your business, too.
Marketing Ideas: Use Throwback Thursday for Greater Engagement
Here are five ways you can use the nostalgia of Throwback Thursday to market your business and products:
Collect photos of past events and products and share them on Facebook. Bring out those old polaroids of when you first started your business. Do you have pictures of you and your employees in stereotypical 80’s outfits, or next to now vintage automobiles? If you don’t already do this, make sure you are keeping photos of all the events you attend. Share trade show photos you have from the past on Thursdays to advertise any upcoming trade shows you will be attending. Do this with your products as well – post photos of what you used to sell, next to the now “updated” version. It is a great way to see how much has changed throughout the years.
Bring back those old giveaways. Fanny packs are making a comeback. No, seriously! You might have boxes of old giveaways hidden in a closet somewhere; dig them out and use them at the next tradeshow. Create a throwback sign: “Remember when these were popular?” or “Can you believe how much has changed in 20 years?” People will love seeing a blast from the past.
If you don’t have any retro items, we can help. How about a USB that looks like a cassette? Like, totally awesome!
Have a Throwback Sale. Have a weekly Thursday sale where everything is priced as if it was the year you first opened. For example, if you opened your shop in 1990, advertise “1990 Prices on Throwback Thursdays!” This is a great way to get customers in the door and keep them coming back every Thursday. You could also consider having fun facts throughout your store on Thursdays about the year you opened. You could do facts such as “a loaf of bread in 1990 cost .89 cents” and “In 1990, the most popular product we sold was ____.”
Create a weekly “Fact from the Past” about your business or community on Social Media. Highlight your town and your business by posting a historical fact every Thursday. Invite people to share their own stories as well. If your town has a big event coming up, encourage people to comment with their memories of attending that event in the past.
Host a “Throwback Contest.” There are many ways to host a contest. It could be trivia about your business or town, hosted on Thursdays. Trivia is a great way to create a little friendly competition among your audience members and “throwback trivia” will be fun for all ages. You can also offer discounts to people who come in dressed in the best throwback outfit on Thursdays. Feature the winners on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and ask them to share the photos with others. Your town is unique, so think of ideas to celebrate this uniqueness every Thursday with a different type of contest.
Finally, the key to Throwback Thursday is engagement. Getting people to participate in such a fun trend won’t be difficult. Social media has already exposed them to it. Take advantage of the Throwback Thursday trend by making it a weekly part of your business routine. Try a new #TBT strategy every week to keep it fresh. Additionally, it is a fun way for you to look back and reminisce about all the great things about your business and community!
