Spring officially arrived this week, and along with it, lots of well-known holidays and days of celebration. Passover, Easter, April Fool’s Day, Earth Day, Mother’s Day, Cinco De Mayo, and Memorial Day. Everyone knows about these springtime events, but what about all those other holidays that people often don’t celebrate? It seems as if all spring marketing campaigns have to fit into one of these categories, but there are several opportunities to bring customers in the door getting creative with other special, lesser known, springtime holidays.
This spring, consider thinking outside the spring holiday bubble and creating marketing plans around the lesser known holidays in March, April, and May. These spring holiday marketing tips are an ideal way to stand out and have a little fun.
National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day, March 29
Everyone knows about Small Business Saturday during the winter holiday season, but National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day is a great time to celebrate small businesses in the spring.
Consider creating buttons that say “I Support Local” or “Shopping Local Matters” for your patrons, and ask them to wear them on March 29. Take out an ad in the local newspaper about why shopping local matters, or write to your paper and ask them to do a story about locally-owned and operated businesses to run that week.
Offer discounts and special pricing for other business owners in your community to show your support for them. Vow to only patronize mom and pop shops during that last week of March. There are lots of ways to honor the small mom and pop businesses. Often just bringing awareness to this day will help attract customers and remind them of the importance of shopping local.
National Siblings Day, April 10
On National Siblings Day, you’ll see Facebook and Instagram fill with tributes to siblings. Join in on the fun and encourage gift giving among siblings: “Don’t just recognize your sibling on their birthday, but show how much you appreciate them all year round on National Siblings Day.” It can also be used as a day to encourage siblings to get together and catch up or reconnect.
You can even do specials for siblings who shop together on this day, a “sibling discount.” Another way to celebrate Siblings Day is to create a whole marketing plan around a sibling competition. This one can be done in collaboration with other businesses. Model your competition off of the television show The Amazing Race. Roundup community businesses to offer prizes and incentives for a “Local Amazing Race,” where siblings compete with each other against other brothers and sisters to be named the top “Local Siblings.” It’s a way to bring your community together and get people talking on social media.
Finally, consider partnering with local schools to do something special for National Siblings Day. Kids love events like this.
No Dirty Dishes Day, May 18
This one is made for restaurants and anyone who sells food. Leading up to No Dirty Dishes Day in May, explain the point of the day. Make your patrons aware of the day devoted to having a clean kitchen. Encourage everyone to come in on May 18th. You can serve them, so they won’t have to clean up any messes!
You can even offer No Dirty Dishes Day special pricing. This day is really all about encouraging families to get out and spend quality time together. That’s always a welcome marketing angle.
