You can add any social media piece you’d like in here: should I blog, should I tweet, should I do video for my company? These questions all revolve around increasing your usage of social media and digital marketing.
And they can be answered the same, with two more questions:
- Where is your audience?
- Why do you want to do this (i.e., what are your goals for doing so)?
If you don’t understand the value in escalating your attention and presence on social media, you should look at one person in particular — Donald Trump. Whether you love him or hate him, his use of Twitter has helped him by-pass traditional sources of information — like the news media — and helped him to reach an audience directly without what could be a harmful (to his message) filter.
The same can be said of your business. Why wait for the media to run with your press release? Why not start building your own social media publishing platform?
How to Decide What Extra Social Media to Do?
First, you need to be on social media. You must be engaging people on the sites your ideal customer is on. But what I’m referring to is that next level up like podcasting, blogging, or going live on video in a consistent way. Before you decide what to do, here are some suggestions on how you can select the forum that best fits your business. If you have time to do more than one and it fits your business goals, go for it. Otherwise, you need to find out:
Where your audience is and what they like. Hitting SnapChat hard is a bad idea if you’re targeting Boomers, for example.
What’s your skill set? Some people have a great radio voice. Others are magnanimous in front of a camera. Think about what you do well and go with a part of digital media that complements your skills.
Do you have ongoing education that will help your ideal customer? If your business can help educate your customer on variables affecting your service, they are more likely to buy from you.
Whatever you decide to do, you need to commit to it. Occasional posts won’t build traffic and that’s what you’re looking for.
