Many business owners use this time of year to rethink their traditional markets and the audiences they are trying to connect with. If you’re considering marketing to Millennials, there are a few things you should know, including the types of promotional items Millennials love.
First, congratulations on your marketing choice. Millennials are the largest generational population out there. In the U.S. alone there are 83.1 million people in this demographic and they represent a quarter of the nation’s population. They also make up 21% of consumer discretionary purchasing, which will only increase over the next several years as their salaries do.
But how do you reach them and what do they respond to? Promotional marketing can help.
Promotional Items Millennials Love
Tech. We all know this generation is comprised of digital natives. They’ve always had cable and DVDs. Computers have always been in their homes and classrooms. They love tech and love to stay connected. Products they enjoy include chargers, charging stations, earbuds, and for those ridiculously cold offices — gloves that can be used on touchscreens.
Selfies. It had to be said. No generation takes more pictures of itself than this one (with the exception of possibly the upcoming Gen Z but we’ll have to wait a little on that one). While selfie sticks may be out because everyone already has one, photo ops aren’t. Offering backdrops and funny photo props will make you popular with Millennials at your next conference.
Making a Difference. Millennials were raised to give back and they love to think of themselves as helping. Any item that allows them to do this scores big. Ideas include BPA-free water bottles, Yeti-type reusable cups, and objects made out of recycled things. You could also take a cue from TOMs shoes and give swag and make a donation in their name to a nonprofit of their choice.
If you want to sell to Millennials you have to get to know them. Help them build a relationship with your business. Tell them about the good things you’re doing. They don’t want to just buy from you. They want to feel good about lending their support to a cause or business they believe in.
