5 Popular Misconceptions About Promotional Marketing

When I tell people we handle offline marketing, they look at me like they’ve forgotten what life is like offline. But promotional marketing is still a very effective way to get people’s attention.

Popular Misconceptions About Promotional Marketing

Promotional Marketing Is a Thing of the Past

While there are a lot of bright and shiny marketing options out there, promotional marketing is still going strong. L.J. Market Research conducted a study that found 52% of participants given a promotional item, ultimately did business with that company. The other 48% admitted they would be more likely to do business with that company in the future after receiving a promotional product. That’s not a bad return on investment for a few dollars per item.

People Don’t Want Swag

Not only is this not true, at most conferences and trade shows it’s an expectation. In shows like SXSW and SalesForce’s DreamForce, for example, vendors often compete for best swag. It draws attention and traffic to your booth.

Promotional Marketing Items Are Only for Trade Shows

Companies of all sizes use promotional marketing items. Some companies send thank you gifts for online shoppers, others keep items in their brick and mortar store for the taking. It largely depends what you’re trying to accomplish as to how the swag will be used. But don’t discount its effectiveness just because you’re not doing trade shows.

Swag Is Boring Junk

If you haven’t checked out the many options in promotional items recently, you may be surprised. There’s an item to fit every budget and every audience. The most effective swag is often utilitarian. If it’s useful for your audience, they’ll use it. If they use it, they’ll be reminded if you and your business over and over.

Cheap Swag Is the Best

That depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. If you’re a title agent and your promotional item is a pen, you don’t need to spend a lot of money on that since most people think of them as disposable in a way. However, if you want it to last and make an impression, you’re better served with a pricier item that is useful to your audience.
