How to Become More Emotionally Attractive and Succeed in Business

According to Statista, the world’s cosmetic and beauty industry is worth $62.46 billion in 2016 and it’s been growing steadily each year since 2003. Let’s face it, we spend a lot of money trying to look good. But as much as beauty may turn heads initially, it’s emotional attraction that can improve our businesses. Luckily, being emotionally attractive isn’t dependent on good genes and symmetry, things we don’t have any control over.

In a recent article, marketer extraordinaire Seth Godin writes about how being emotionally attractive, those who are “open, empathetic, optimistic, flexible, generous, warm, connected, creative and interesting” have an easier time in business. These qualities are something we can all pursue, he writes, “if we care enough.”

That’s the key–if we care enough. There’s no magic powder or elixir. We have to do this on our own.

So how do you do it? Here are a few tips.

 

Easy Ways to Become More Emotionally Attractive

1. Listen during conversations. Don’t spend your time thinking about what you’ll say next. Let the conversation flow.
2. Make eye contact. Don’t scan the room.
3. Ask (thoughtful) questions about what others are saying. Ask their opinions and reflect on them.
4. Set aside time each day to do something creative or something that feeds your passion. Spend time with people who do as well. Developing a hobby or interest will make you a more interesting person.
5. Give generously of your time.
6. Make people feel welcomed. If you’re at a party and notice someone standing around awkwardly introduce yourself.
7. Assume the universe has a wonderful surprise in store for you each day. Don’t dwell on the negative wondering what else could go wrong. Instead, think about how every low is followed by a high and get curious about what that high will be. Start looking for signs of it the same way you might look for a rainbow during a storm.

Practice these things every day and you may be surprised to find people warming up to you. Most folks want to do business with people they know, like, and trust. Becoming more emotionally attractive will go a long way in helping this come to fruition.
