If you have a great staff with any sort of longevity with you, it should be recognized. While many employers choose to reward employee loyalty with a gift card, you should also consider a physical representation of their time with you. Here’s why:
Top of Mind Reminder
Your employees knows exactly how long they’ve worked for you, but a physical representation of service reminds them of your appreciation long after that gift certificate is spent.
Personalized awards (using engraving) makes them more meaningful, or select a special design that speaks to the employee. It is an extra touch he or she will appreciate.
Confidence Instilling
If they display the award in their cubicle or office, not only will the appreciation of their service be top-of-mind to them, it will be to everyone who sees it as well. The employee recognition award becomes a conversation starter. It also instills confidence in customers who see it, because they know that person has been with the company for many years and understands how things work.
Incentive and Feedback
Most companies don’t give out service awards until the five-year mark, yet studies have shown Millennials want instant feedback on the type of work they’re doing.
See the problem?
Creating a service award (even if it’s just a nice personal letter on corporate letterhead) and a small token or fun desk item is a nice way to recognize someone on the anniversary of their first day of work with you. It’s also something appealing to a generation that doesn’t have any idea where they’ll be in 5 years. The big anniversaries should always be celebrated in a large way, but why not celebrate the little ones as well?
Happy employees are productive employees. If you’re thinking employee awards benefit the employee, you’re only half right. Lack of recognition is one of the main reasons people leave a job, outside of no room for advancement. It’s time you see employee awards as an investment in your human resources and future business production capabilities.
