Ever since email came around, it looked like paper mail would be on its way out. But this is far from the truth, and mail is actually a great way to reach your clientele.
With email, if the tagline doesn’t catch a person’s attention, they can automatically hit delete without even opening it. Mail is different. Most people will read it (or at least glance at it) before deciding if it needs to go in the junk pile. And getting mail that isn’t a bill is actually really fun!
Reach Your Audience with These Direct Mail Ideas
There are so many ways to use direct mail and postcards in your marketing campaigns. Here are a few ideas for you to consider:
Birthday Postcards
Everyone loves being remembered on their birthday! Send your customers “Happy Birthday!” postcards to brighten their day, and convey that special message. You don’t even have to offer them anything; knowing that you remembered their birthday and cared enough to send a note will make you memorable, and make them a loyal customer.
Then again, offering them a discount that’s good for the month of their birthday or a free surprise with purchase can bring them back to your business even if they weren’t planning on visiting.
Reminders
Let’s face it, life gets busy. Reminder mailings are perfect for businesses that offer needed return services like auto mechanics (your service is due!), dentists and doctors (time to make that appointment), veterinarians (Fluffy is due for their shots), accountants (time to gather up your tax materials), and hairdressers (it’s been 3 months since you lasted treated yourself – come back and see us!). With so many of these types of businesses, reminder postcards are a great way to make sure they keep coming back to you.
Handwritten Thank You Notes
Handwritten, personalized thank you notes go a long way. Whether you are thanking loyal customers, thanking your business partners, or employees, what a nice surprise it is to get a handwritten thank you in the mail. For your loyal customers, you can even let them know they can stop in the store for a thank you surprise!
Business Review Reminders or Thank You Notes
This one combines the two ideas above; either send a reminder card for someone to write a review of your business (especially if they had a good experience) or send a handwritten thank you for a glowing review you received.
Referral Cards
Your customer keeps one and passes the other one along to a friend. This is an effective way to use your network of current customers to build up your client base. You can either make it worth a certain amount or again, offer a percentage off.
You can even offer your current customer a referral punch card. For every person they bring in the door, they receive a punch. When the card is full give them a super generous incentive like half off an item or service.
“Money” to Spend at Your Business
Who doesn’t love receiving money?? Create your own “business money” – kind of like a gift card but shaped like dollar bills. This is way more fun to receive than just a gift card. Then they can bring in their money and spend it on goods in your store.
Finally, one of the benefits of direct mail is that many countries are cracking down on spam emails. Plus, with the average person receiving over 121 emails a day, your valuable marketing message can easily get lost, sent to junk, or simply delated to clear a chaotic inbox. Don’t give up on the benefit of direct mail.
If you personalize your mailings and provide your audience with something they want or need, you’re direct mail open and conversion rates will be much higher than your emails.
