October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to bring awareness to this insidious disease. Originally designed to educate women on the benefits of early detection, this movement has grown to International recognition with people everywhere wearing pink in October. From football teams to actors in Hollywood, people from all walks of life are embracing this work. If you’d like to get your business involved in raising awareness about breast cancer, here are a few things you can do:
Host a pink day
Invite your employees to wear all pink on a specific day during the month of October. You can partner this with something fun like a bake sale or a fundraising opportunity to help raise funds for a particular person fighting this illness or for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
If you’re unable or people are unwilling to wear pink at your place of business, you can always create pink lapel pins or pink ribbon accessories that employees can show their support without being dressed entirely in pink.
Post on social media
There are a lot of posts you can create in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For instance, you can share resources for women such as local places for free mammograms, information or links showing women how to benefit from early detection, or even information about breast cancer in men. Whatever your demographic, look for a way in which you can be helpful.
You can also post things like encouraging statistics, information about early detection and cure statistics, and ways to help in the community. Don’t forget to tell people on social media about what’s behind all of the pink. Make sure they understand the importance of awareness when it comes to fighting cancer.
Share someone’s story who has been affected by cancer
Chances are you or your employees know someone who has been affected by breast cancer. You may even have an employee who is a cancer warrior. Consider sharing that person’s story. Cover things like initial discovery and what helped them beat cancer into remission. Focus on the challenges but also on the inspiration. These types of stories can be incredibly moving and show a different side of your company. However, you should never showcase someone else’s story without them being aware that you’re doing so. In the case of your employee, make sure you ask if it’s okay before you share it. Places you can share their story include social media, your blog, and/ or your newsletter.
Give time or money
Another way to observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to give of your time or your money. There are many organizations out there that are looking for volunteers. Those organizations are looking for all levels of time available. For instance, there are organizations that collect hair for wigs of cancer victims. You can donate hair or be a part of the collection process. Some organizations offer free rides to chemotherapy and doctors’ appointments for people with cancer. You can offer to drive them. For almost any need, there is an organization out there to help fill it. If you’re unsure of how to get involved contact the American Cancer Society or the Breast Cancer Foundation and they will put you in touch with someone in your community.
You can also make direct donations to organizations working on behalf of people with cancer. Don’t forget fundraisers you can do at work such as a bake sale, a race of some kind, soliciting employee donations, or hosting an event.
Swag
If you give out swag, during the month of October you may consider either giving out something pink or making it related to breast cancer awareness. Breast cancer awareness swag is a nice way to show your support and improve awareness of this disease. You can also order special breast cancer awareness t-shirts for your employees or most loyal customers. Check out some of the specials we offer for this month: 2019 Breast Cancer Awareness
Partner with a foundation
Breast cancer awareness organizations like the Breast Cancer Foundation often offer opportunities for partnerships. The National Breast Cancer Foundation has corporate sponsorships where breast cancer awareness marketing materials are made available for special events, fundraisers, and general awareness campaigns. It benefits the foundation in getting out its message and also shows your audience and customers what causes are near and dear to your heart.
Designate a portion of a product or service
Instead of a fundraiser or direct donations, you can make one of your products or services into an item that benefits breast cancer awareness. For instance, you can pledge a percentage of the purchase price of your strawberry milkshake for breast cancer funding or a percentage of a t-shirt you sell for breast cancer awareness.
This idea not only helps you raise money for a very good cause, it may encourage someone to buy something in October. For instance, If you sell a high-end item with a long sales cycle, you could designate a portion of the sale to breast cancer research. For a customer who this cause means a lot to, this may sway them to make the purchase in the month of October knowing that once that month has passed, the offer does too.
Make a commitment to women or breast cancer survivors
Some businesses give back by looking for ways to honor women and or breast cancer survivors. These options may include a scholarship for people who want to study cancer research, a discount for cancer survivors, or something free for those going through cancer treatment currently. There are many ways to show your support for this demographic and helping out financially in some way is a very strong one.
Don’t stop there
Cause marketing is a huge way for customers and potential customers to feel better about the organizations they’re doing business with. People want to get to know who they’re giving their money to. If breast cancer isn’t a cause that moves you, or if you’ve enjoyed being a part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, think of other causes you may support as well.
Remember support doesn’t always have to be financial. Sometimes you can find ways to help certain demographics by making your business more consumer-friendly. For instance, while the law requires accessible ramps and things like that for a business, you don’t have to stop at that. You can do more. You can think about what a particular demographic needs. Perhaps you can create a soothing environment for people with sensory issues. If you have a restaurant, you can create gluten-free options. Whatever you choose to do for whatever group or foundation, make sure your audience knows you want to ensure the people who need the assistance understand that you’re there to give it.
This October join the quest for a cure and help bring awareness to a terrible disease. When the disease is caught early, cancer patients are more likely to survive. Until we can find a cure, early diagnosis is our best tool in keeping the mortality rates low.
