Unless you’re Ebeneezer Scrooge, you understand the importance of employee happiness. Happy employees:
- give better customer service
- welcome new employees on board
- take on additional work because they feel vested in what the company is doing
- are more productive
And that’s just the beginning. But how do you know if your employees are truly happy? Will they tell you if they’re not? If you don’t know whether your employees are happy or not that’s almost as big a problem as them not being happy. So here are some ways you can tell whether your employees are content with things at your business.
5 Ways to Tell Your Employees Are Happy
They Have Goals
First, you can ask them. But don’t ask them, “are you happy here?” That will put them on the spot and they won’t know how to tell you if they’re not. A happy employee looks forward to the future. They have ideas about where they want to go and what they want to do within your organization. So start there. Ask them what their short-term and long-term goals are within your company. Happy employees will have some.
They Smile
As simple as this may seem people who are happy often show it outwardly. Very few people will try to hide happiness. On the other hand, they may try to hide unhappiness.
They Respect Others
Happy employees respect others and want to see them succeed. Great team players and cheerleaders of your business are rarely unhappy because helping others whether they be employees or customers is hard to do when you’re miserable.
They Are Honest About the Support They Need
A happy employee will tell you what they need to do their job when asked because they take pride in doing their job well. A happy employee will also tell you because they will trust that you will remove the impediments for them in doing their job.
They Build Relationships
Whether it be with coworkers or with customers, happy employees build relationships at work. That’s not to say that everyone needs a best friend at work, but studies have shown that relationships at work improve morale.
How do you think your employees measure up? Happy or not?
