We see a lot of varied marketing strategies as a promotional marketing company. We have old school marketing clients and people very comfortable with the digital age. We spend a lot of time learning about best practices so that we can advise our clients accordingly. Still, there are several mistakes that old and new companies alike make. Here’s what we see in our learning and how you can avoid them.
3 Common Marketing Mistakes
Not Looking at the Whole Picture
If you’re fortunate to have a team of marketing people under a central head, you likely have a unified marketing approach, but if you’re like many small businesses you have asked several people to help out in handling different aspects of marketing. One person may handle social media, another may order your promotional marketing items for your trade show, and another may attend your trade show. This disjointed “team” is missing the benefits of an integrated plan.
Selecting One Area and Only Doing It
Often businesses that are short on time and resources select one area of marketing to concentrate on. The rest they either don’t do or do so halfheartedly. The most effective marketing combines all areas and performs them evenly. Think of the spokes on a wagon wheel. Each spoke needs to be the same length or your wheel will no longer be round and operate efficiently. Don’t select one area to make it your only “basket.” You know what they say about eggs and those things.
Talking Only About Yourself
This applies to social media and all of your marketing collaterals. In order to get noticed in marketing these days it needs to be about your audience – what they want, desire, and need. When you talk about yourself, people turn off. It’s difficult to sell to someone who isn’t listening.
